Hannah

Software Engineer

Hannah studied Information and Computer Engineering at Cambridge University, and joined CMR in May 2017 after working in technology consultancy writing Python and C++. She works as part of the embedded team writing safety critical C and integration tests in Python.

“I love knowing that the software I write will have a positive impact on the world – it’s so motivating to be working on medical technology. Writing safety critical embedded code is a rewarding challenge, too! Plus, robots are pretty cool. The culture at CMR is so friendly, and I love the feeling of working in a large team with a shared vision and investment in our work.”

Saad

Graduate Embedded Engineer

Saad started his journey at CMR shortly after obtaining his MEng degree in Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Cambridge. His day to day role involves a great deal of design work through schematic capture and practical work through PCB bring up and system integration.

“Learning new things daily is one of the most enjoyable aspects of my job. I have always been a keen student, and as a graduate working alongside senior engineers, I am able to greatly benefit from their wealth of experience. It’s awesome to be able to apply my knowledge in a challenging, fast-paced environment, and working towards an ethical goal of improving lives make it all the more satisfying. The people at CMR are highly energetic and very friendly, and I even get Halal meat mostly for myself at the monthly barbeques!”

Fraser

Sales Executive

Fraser joined CMR after graduating from Cambridge’s Judge Business School. His day to day work involves engaging with surgeons and the clinical community, go-to-market strategy, and health economics.

“The best part of my job is being out and about speaking to our potential end users. I never thought I would work in healthcare but it’s incredibly rewarding. Surgeons and nurses are inspiring people to spend time with and it’s great to discuss how Versius can bring value to them and patients alike. CMR has a big, ambitious vision and both the technology and the people at CMR are world class, but the environment is fun and dynamic.”

Leigh-Anna

Creative Marketing and Events Assistant

Shortly after finishing her degree in Graphic Design at Cambridge School of Art, Leigh-Anna joined the team in August 2016. Day to day she manages the branding and design work for the company whilst working alongside the engineers, training and sales team to provide design input and marketing collateral.

“I’m a designer at heart, I thoroughly enjoy working in an environment where I am surrounded by creativity and productivity. I have spent a lot of time working with different departments which helps me build connections with people, inside and outside of work. The atmosphere here is collaborative and supportive, which you don’t always see in larger companies. I never thought after graduating that I’d end up working in such a dynamic, fast-paced working environment with as much responsibility as I have. The people here are great and genuinely believe in our mission!”

Paul

Staff Software Engineer

Paul studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge. Since then, he’s worked in embedded software, mainly in wireless communications, before joining CMR in May 2017. He now looks after the team responsible for critical functionality around the endoscope.

“The work is fast paced and varied, so I’ve found myself writing and testing code, bring up parts of the system, and making plans for the team’s future work. The people here are bright and have a “can do” attitude. If you have a good idea, they’re always prepared to take it on board. Our efforts are paying off: it’s exciting to see the system in action.”

Nikki

Mechanical Engineer

Nikki graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Mechanical Engineering before spending a year as a stage engineer. She joined CMR in September 2014 and has then been juggling mechanical design work, collaborative work with the embedded team and building robots in the workshop.

“Since day 1 at CMR, I have felt part of a very supportive community where I have been given the opportunity to learn new skills while contributing to an ambitious project. CMR has a strong collaborative culture within and between teams. The fast-paced environment makes it a very rewarding place to work at as every contribution is valued. We are also very determined to have fun by going cycling, running, climbing or throwing together the occasional dodgeball tournament!”

Joshua

Mechanical Technician

After finishing an apprenticeship in electronics at Cambridge sixth form and in conjunction with Cambridge Silicon Radio, Josh joined CMR in May 2017. Day to day he works on building and maintaining the cart and arm of the Versius system, along with building the instruments used for the procedures.

“This job is a fantastic opportunity for me to develop my skills and learn new things. I have a keen interest in anything electrical. I’m always taking things apart and putting them back together to see what I can change or improve. My job role is incredibly interesting and I can always count on something challenging happening. Everyone here has a great attitude towards work which really keeps up morale. There is a thriving community spirit which I feel makes the company so special. I also have a great interest in board games which roles over nicely in the growing popularity of games night within the company.”

Ana

Quality Co-ordinator

Ana’s background is in audit and consulting and joined CMR in December 2016, after finishing her PhD in Health Information Systems. Ana works with development and manufacturing engineers to resolve quality-related issues and to maintain CMR’s quality management system to address medical device regulations.

“I love working in medical device development and the impact it has in peoples’ lives. The drive and ambition at CMR along with the caring, supportive and diverse environment are a wonderful combination. It is great that I can leverage from my industry experience and research to work with a bright team to change the game in robotic-assisted surgery”

Agnese

Graduate Embedded Engineer

Agnese graduated in July 2016 with a Master’s Degree in Medical Physics at University of Milan, Italy. She joined CMR as an Engineering Intern in March 2017 and was quickly promoted. From the first day, she has been involved in the development of the endoscope system, and on a daily basis she tests new firmware/software releases, brainstorm on possible hardware modifications and experiment them in the electrical lab.

“I’m learning lots every day, both from a technical perspective and a personal one. I’ve been focusing on very specific parts of the system and can both apply and develop my skills, and yet I’ve been able to gain the complete picture of it, thanks to the profound involvement fostered by the company managers. Even if I have only been here few months, I totally feel part of this great adventure!”

Claudia

Business Development Assistant

Claudia gained a PhD from the University of Cambridge in Molecular Biology before moving into Biotech start-ups with the aim of creating real-world impact and improving healthcare. After a brief stint consulting for Pharma, she joined CMR in 2016 and is helping the commercialisation efforts in the build-up to launch.

“At CMR one day is never the same as another! The work is varied and challenging in equal measure making it enjoyable and fun. Although everyone is focused on delivering the best possible tool to surgeons (so that patients will have access to improved outcomes), there is still time to have fun either playing table tennis, dodgeball, board games, Lego, or at the regular company barbecues and pub nights. It is a privilege to work with this team and towards a brighter tomorrow in healthcare.”

David

Principal Manufacturing Engineer

Since his first role as a Junior Laboratory Technician, David’s career has seen him hold a number of roles, and recently he took a novel POC IVD through establishing manufacture, to market launch. Today, the setup of the internal CMR manufacturing team, process and procedures is his primary focus, supporting the business as it grows.

“Coming to work in such a dynamic environment is something you just can’t beat. It’s an interesting change to be dealing with engineers rather than scientists, but being part of this project is something truly unique. The company has supported rapid growth, while keeping hold of the culture that has helped to make it great. The transition from “start up” to established business is a complex one, but with a culture that embodies hard work, innovation and fun, all in an environment that is only formal when it needs to be, makes it a great place to work.”

David

Research Engineer

Upon graduating from Durham University with a Physics degree; David worked in the geophysics industry creating images of the Earth’s subsurface before working his way above ground to CMR. He is now responsible for solving a range of interdisciplinary engineering problems and integrating new technology into CMR.

“I have always enjoyed being challenged by a wide variety of problems, whether it’s creating a multi-stage water rocket, searching for ice on the Moon or helping discover pre-historic oil and gas reservoirs. CMR quenches this thirst for new and unique problems and provides fresh possibilities for invention on a daily basis. On top of this the CMR family is a pleasure to be a part of, we are passionate and focussed on our common vision and manage to maintain a healthy work-life balance, including some lunchtime table tennis!”

Emma

Senior IT Engineer

With a background in Windows and Linux system administration and after some time in data centre management for non-profit organisations, Emma joined the team in May 2017. Day to day working to ensure that IT supports and meets the needs of a growing organisation.

“No two days are the same, the work here is varied, fast paced and I enjoy working in an environment where there is lots happening. There’s a fantastic team culture here, everyone is open, friendly and supportive, which makes it a great place to work. It’s important to me to work somewhere that makes a difference and the people at CMR are all driven to make a positive impact by developing the next-generation surgical robot.”

Jessica

Training and Business Development Assistant

Jessica studied Biomedical Materials Science at Nottingham University and continued to Doctorate level as part of the MINERVA-improved medical diagnostic project. She was also a teaching assistant at the University. Jessica joined the team in January 2017. She facilitates surgeon and surgical team training, creates the training curriculum, implements usability trials and helps to organise clinical trials.

“The people at CMR are inspirational, we all come from different backgrounds but we work hard together which helps us move forward at an exceptional pace. We also have great fun too! I love the variety of my job, it keeps me on my toes but it’s exciting to be faced with different challenges. It helps that I can draw from my experiences both as an engineer and in teaching, but it gives you confidence to know everyone is here for support if needed! It’s great to feel like you have made a difference and the team here definitely makes you feel valued.”

Matthew

Graduate Mechanical Engineer

Matthew joined CMR in September 2016 as a graduate mechanical engineer after completing a degree in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. Day to day he works on designing parts and running tests to help improve the performance of critical components within the Versius system.

“I really enjoy the variety of the work – I get to work on my designs initially in CAD but also in the mechanical build and testing that follows. I’m often involved with working closely with people from different disciplines which I have found is great for solving complex problems and learning new skills. In addition to the team here being very friendly, the company has many institutions, such as a monthly barbeque and frequent socials, which make working here a pleasure.”
